Laura Johnson

Laura is an artist, educator, social scientist and climate activist.

She has a strong contemporary arts practice centered around the environment and climate justice, with recent grants, exhibitions and museum commissions in Edinburgh and Glasgow, which include community outreach projects with underserved youth.

Examples of recent projects include a diptych on climate change effects on children, funded by the Data for Children Collaborative with UNICEF. With this funding and the Scottish Government Climate Engagement Fund, Laura is also working with the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh to create a National Children’s Climate Quilt, engaging children and families throughout the UK. She has also recently painted a grant funded piece for the Arctic Science Summit Week UK (ASSW) and a Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) funded piece on climate change in the Arctic, which hangs at the Glasgow Science Museum. Her work has also been selected by the National Galleries of Scotland to grace the cover of a Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF)book for Cop26 on Scottish Greenspace.

She has an MSc in Environment and Development from University of Edinburgh, and an MFA in Painting and Drawing, as well as a Graduate Certificate in Disability Studies. She has held full-time primary, secondary and University art teaching positions. She is a licensed preK-12th grade/primary-secondary art teacher (ages 4-18+).

In addition to creating art, climate activism, working with children and teaching, Laura is passionate about hiking, yoga, sailing and biking.
